Shopping trips today: $37.90 spent, $114.66 saved

I went out this morning for a few quick trips, because I can't resist deals like what we're getting this week! I was hoping to find the Wellness coupon book at Albies but didn't see it anywhere (bummer!) so in the essence of saving time I decided paying for granola bars wasn't so bad.
Albertsons: $2 spent, $51.15 saved (2 transactions)
Safeway: $35.90 spent, $63.51 saved (64%)

I also got back $6.50 in catalinas from the Safeway transaction ($4 from Pillsbury and $2.50 from Kikkoman). We were out of a lot of things and there were a few really great deals on things we like (avocados 2/$1!!). I also got my freebies from today's paper but have no idea what to do with ground turkey. Guess I'll be searching for a recipe!

  2. Was your total at Safeways above 50 after coupons? I'm wondering if the free pasta deal is 50 before or after coupons.

  3. Josefina, my total was below $50 at Safeway after coupons. The free pasta deal works (or should work) as long as your total is over $50 before you figure in your club card discount and coupons. If you check out my post here: http://maybefrugal.blogspot.com/2010/01/understanding-safeway-coupon-policy.html
you'll find a more detailed explination as well as a link to a page on Safeway's site that shows this in clear print. You might print it out and bring it along with you just in case!

  4. I didn't mention it, but the full regular price of the free items counts towards your $50 requirement as well. At my store, they added up to about $8.55 of the total.

  5. Great meatloaf with ground turkey... use it and mix in some italian chicken sausage (I cut these up really well).

    Mix together:
    17 crushed saltines
    1/4 cup milk
1/3 cup minced fresh parsley (or 1 Tbsp dried parsley)
    3 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
    1 large egg
    1 1/2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
    1 tsp. onion powder
    1 tsp. garlic powder
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    3/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 pounds of meat (1 pound ground turkey and approx. 1/2 pound of cut up italian chicken sausage)

Sauce (mix together and save - see below): 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar, 4 tsp. cider vinegar.

Mix meatloaf stuff together well. Make into mini meatloaves (size of my palm, in shape of a football) or you can put it in an 8 x 8 pan and pat it down (My husband prefers the mini-meatloaves). Put a tsp. of oil in a pan and brown mini meatloaves on both sides. Then, transfer to a 9x13 pan. Cover meatloaves with sauce and cook (covered with foil) in a 450 degree oven for 20 minutes or so (or until not pink inside). If cooked in an 8 x 8 pan, it takes longer to cook. Experiment with sauce - Sometimes I make 1 1/2 recipes of sauce because we like more of it.

I have given this recipe out to a number of friends and it is now the favorite meatloaf recipe (and I DON'T like meatloaf, normally).

  6. You really got a lot for $35 at Safeway! I never seem to have that much luck there. Maybe it's because I put my focus on other stores. I love all the catalina deals recently. Nice job!

  7. It's easy to get distracted by other stores, especially on weeks like this past one! That's why I love seeing other people's trips- reminds me of things I might want to buy.
